心に残る映画 A Memorable Film

「黄金のアデーレ　Ｗoman in Gold」の魅力　

美術を題材とした映画は「ダ・ビンチ　コード」（2006年　トム・ハンクス主演）や「ミケランジェロ・プロジェクト」（2014年　ジョージ・クルーニー監督・主演）など秀作が数多くあるが、中でも忘れられない作品がある。クリムトの作品を題材とした「黄金のアデーレ　名画の帰還　2015年 (Woman in Gold) 」である。第二次世界大戦末期、ナチスドイツに収奪され、戦後はオーストリア政府に移管されたグスタフ・クリムトの「アデーレ・ブロッホ＝バウアーの肖像画　(Woman in Gold) 」を正当な権利者である主人公の老婦人と駆け出しの弁護士のコンビが大西洋を挟んで（アメリカ合衆国とオーストリア）作品の返還を求めて法廷闘争を繰り広げる物語である。正当な権利者であるマリア・アルトマンの実体験を基に描かれた作品だけに胸に迫るものがある。
立ち塞がる強大な国家権力（オーストリア政府）の前に一度は作品の奪還を諦めてしまう主人公の老婦人、しかし後にその作品の価値に気づいた青年弁護士は自らの祖先がかつてナチスの虐殺の犠牲者だったことを改めて思い出し、作品奪還に向けて彼女を励ます。
時に対立し、時に協働する主人公と青年弁護士の関係は、強い緊張感を伴いながら1本の中心軸となって、この映画全体を貫いている。主人公役ヘレン・ミレンの演技もさることながら、前半から後半への心理描写の変化を見事に演じて見せた脚本と青年弁護士役ライアン・レイノルズの演技が光っていた。

About the movie, charming 「Ｗoman in Gold」

There are many outstanding films centered on art, such as The Da Vinci Code (2006, starring Tom Hanks) and The Monuments Men (2014, directed by and starring George Clooney). Among them, however, there is one film I find unforgettable: Woman in Gold.

Set in the final stages of World War II, the story follows the legal battle to reclaim Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Gustav Klimt, which was looted by Nazi Germany, and after the war transferred to the Austrian government. The film depicts how an elderly woman—the rightful heir—and a young, inexperienced lawyer join forces across the Atlantic (between the United States and Austria) to fight in court for the painting’s return. Based on the true story of Maria Altmann, the film carries a powerful emotional impact.

At one point, faced with the overwhelming authority of the Austrian state, the elderly protagonist nearly gives up her quest to recover the painting. However, the young lawyer, having come to understand the work’s true significance, is reminded that his own ancestors were victims of Nazi atrocities, and he encourages her to continue the fight for its restitution.

The relationship between the protagonist and the young lawyer—sometimes in conflict, sometimes in cooperation—forms the central axis of the film, running throughout with a strong sense of tension. In addition to the outstanding performance by Helen Mirren in the leading role, the screenplay—depicting a remarkable psychological evolution from the first half to the second—and the performance of Ryan Reynolds as the young lawyer are particularly noteworthy.
